PRODUCT DATABASE

Botëval obtains detailed product information on the cosmetics in its database from online retailers, manufacturers, product packaging, and through its users.

AGGREGATED CONSUMER RATINGS

Botëval calculates an average rating of consumer reviews by aggregating consumer ratings from multiple online sources. The main online sources are cited on our site by clicking on the “information” icon next to the aggregated rating, with links redirecting to each source.

INGREDIENTS PROFILE

Botëval proprietary algorithm analyses the ingredients listing of each product in its database to identify any potential health, vegan or environment concerns associated with the composition of the cosmetic product. Botëval reveals the number of controversial ingredients that were detected across 3 alert groups: Botëval scan alert, Vegan alert, and Environment alert.

BOTËVAL SCAN ALERT:

Botëval scans the ingredients listings of all products in its database to make sure that Botëval users have been informed of the presence of potentially undesired ingredients in their cosmetics. We have created the “Botëval controversies red list” reflecting the main controversial ingredient categories that beauty consumers would most like to avoid. These ingredients are mainly suspected by organizations or government agencies around the world to be strong irritants, sensitizers, hormone disruptors, carcinogens, neurotoxins, or allergens.

Botëval controversies red list contains the following ingredients’ categories:

  • butylated compounds (bha, bht, …)
  • controversial preservatives (triclosan, phenoxyethanol, chlorphenesin, …)
  • controversial solvents (xylene, benzene, toluene, …)
  • controversial uv filters (benzophenone, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, ...)
  • controversial volatile silicones (cyclomethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, …)
  • formaldehyde & formaldehyde releasers
  • fragrance allergens (eu regulated)
  • nano
  • parabens
  • phthalates
  • p-phenylenediamine & derivatives
  • retinol
  • sls/sles & derivatives (sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, …)
  • synthetic fragrance

All products that are free of these ingredients’ categories qualify as “Clean by Botëval” or “Botëval scan friendly

VEGAN ALERT:

Botëval scans the ingredients listings of all products in its database to make sure that Botëval users have been informed of the presence of animal-derived ingredients in their cosmetics. Botëval’s Vegan alert is limited to the analysis of the product’s ingredients listing. The product development process, manufacturing and testing practices, packaging, etc. are not taken into consideration in our “Vegan alerts”.

Fragrances could sometimes be derived from animal-derived ingredients. We decided, as a precaution, to always identify “fragrance” as an animal-derived ingredient. We recommend our users to check if it’s stated otherwise by the manufacturer or third parties certifiers.

All products that are free of animal-derived ingredients in their ingredients listing qualify as “Vegan friendly”.

ENVIRONMENT ALERT:

Botëval scans the ingredients listings of all products in its database to make sure that Botëval users have been informed of the presence of microplastics and eco-toxic ingredients in their cosmetics. Botëval’s Environment alert is limited to the ingredients’ analysis of the product’s ingredients listing. Raw materials sourcing, manufacturing, waste management, transportation, packaging, product life cycle, etc. are not taken into consideration in our “Environment alerts”.

Botëval’s list of microplastics and eco-toxic ingredients contains the following categories :

  • controversial solvents (xylene, benzene, toluene, …)
  • controversial uv filters (benzophenone, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, ...)
  • heavy metals (or potential traces of heavy metals)
  • microplastics
  • petroleum / mineral oils
  • silicones

All products that are free of microplastics and the listed eco-toxic ingredients qualify as “Environment friendly

BOTËVAL MATCHES & % MATCHING

Leveraging cosmetics formulation science with artificial intelligence, we have developed Botëval’s proprietary algorithm that analyzes objectively the ingredients, technology, price, and performance/effectiveness of all cosmetic products in our database to recommend cheaper, better or cleaner alternatives … and to reveal perfect dupes if any!

Contrary to most websites and apps recommending product alternatives, Botëval looks at all the key dimensions of a cosmetic product starting from its composition and ending with its perceived performance and effectiveness by real users, in order to recommend product matches with the highest possible accuracy.

Our proprietary algorithm calculates a % matching compared to the reference product. All matches with a % matching above or equal to 50% are considered as good matches. No product with a % matching lower than 50% is shown as a match.

ERROR REPORTING

Any error with a product can be reported by clicking on: “A problem with this product?” then describing the problem. The report gets then sent to us, for us to have a closer look.
